2014 OGBR JJHuddle All-Ohio

All_ohio_gbkb_largeThis week JJHuddle rolled out the OGBR JJHuddle All-Ohio teams. They started earlier in the week with honorable mention, then third team, second team and first team.

There was a panel of four voters and they looked at girls across the state and across all four divisions. Three of the first team players are McDonald’s All-Americans. Sydney made second team and had 31 points (I think out of a possible 40.) Pretty nice list of players. Congratulations to all the girls that made the list.

All-Ohio Girls Basketball Divisions I-II

Syd 1000Earlier this week, the lists were released naming the All-Ohio Girls Basketball Teams for Divisions 1-4. This year Sydney was named to First Team All-Ohio for Division 2. Girls basketball in Ohio is getting stronger and stronger with a number of Ohio players being nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Team. There are three Ohio girls that will play this year in that prestigious event.

Here is the First Team for Division 2:

FIRST TEAM: Laina Snyder, Millersburg West Holmes, 6-foot-1, senior, 14.9; Amanda Cahill, Clyde, 6-1, sr., 20.1; Alli Pavlik, Cortland Lakeview, 5-7, sr., 26.9; Sydney Brackemyre, Clinton-Massie, 6-1, sr., 15.6; Dominique Doseck, Athens, 5-7, jr., 22.1; Shantell Bostick, Cleve. Tough Loss, but a Great Season

Massie SeniorsThe Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons season came to an end last night with a loss to Alter at Springfield High School in the Regional Semifinal. It was a tough way to end the season, but what a great season it was for the team.

Both teams entered the game undefeated and Alter couldn’t seem to miss, hitting 6 out of 9 three pointers in the first half. Massie had a tough time getting the ball in the bucket and that trend just carried on through the game. By the end of the game Massie didn’t make a three-point shot.

Syd came into the game with a dislocated index finger on her shooting. The injury occurred in the first quarter of the District Final game last Friday night. She played through the pain, even breaking open the stitches at some point in the first quarter. She led the team in scoring with ten points. She had tweeted that this was going to be a toughness test. I would say she definitely passed.

The Lady Falcons made school and county history by going through the regular season undefeated. They ended the season with a 26-1 record, three-peating as SCOL champions and repeating as District champs. They have much to be proud of.

Dabbelt’s Division 2 All Area Team

sydMany times in the past I have re-posted or referenced information from the Dabbelt Report, which covers girls basketball in the state of Ohio. Each year Jim Dabbelt releases his All Area teams for Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4 as well as his choice for Ms. Basketball in the Miami Valley.

His All Area team for Division 2 is below and two Clinton-Massie players made the first team: Sydney and Kasey Uetrecht. Syd was also picked as his Division 2 Player of the Year.

You can see the entire D2 list on his blog page as well as explore his picks for all four divisions. Here is his first team for D2:

Sydney Bates, 5-8 Soph., Springfield Kenton Ridge- Came back from a shoulder injury to put up some great numbers this season. Outstanding shooter with three-point range. Had a great last half of the season, ending the season averaging 16.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and nearly 80% from the line.

Maddie Bazelak, 6-0 Jr., Kettering Alter- super athletic kid who has a high basketball IQ and has been inquired about more than once from the coaches at the next level. Bazelak is also a volleyball standout for the Knights, but in basketball, she averaged 10.7 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Emma Bockrath, 5-8 Sr., Kettering Alter- The offensive leader for the powerful Knights squad has had a very solid junior season, near the top of every Alter category. Bockrath scored 15 points per game, while grabbing 4.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and nearly three steals per game.

Sydney Brackemyre, 6-1 Sr., Clinton Massie- Came back from an ACL injury stronger than ever as a senior, leading Clinton Massie to a 22-0 regular season record. The Louisville-signee is the best D2 player in Ohio, and earns the Dabbs D2 POY. Averaged 15 points and nearly eight rebounds per game.

Carly Clodfelter, 5-9 Soph., Tippecanoe- I feel that Clodfelter is the premier sophomore in the area, and she had a productive season for the Red Devils. Great slasher, quick and solid in all aspects of her game. Scored 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals per game.

Stefanie Davis, 5-8 Sr., Springfield Kenton Ridge- Solid floor leader for the Cougars, who has a knack for coming up with the clutch shot at the right time. Hard nosed player who had a very solid senior year. Averaged 11.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists and nearly four steals per game.

Danielle Karns, 6-1 Jr., Eaton- Standing over 6-foot, Danielle can do a lot with the basketball. She can post up, step out and shoot the three, and has really improved her game. This college prospect averaged 11 points, 5.7 rebounds

Halee Printz, 5-10 Jr., Tippecanoe- really improved her game from last year to another level. Incredibly hard worker who can drain a three against a zone, or penetrate to the basket. Averaged over 19 points per game, with nearly 10 rebounds and over five assists. Headed to Toledo.

Maddie Schroeder, 6-1 Sr., Dayton Carroll- finished the season as the leading scorer in her conference, and has impressed a lot of the area coaches. Hard nosed post who gave Carroll the leadership they needed with several young players in the lineup. Averaged 17.9 points, 12.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.1 steals per game, shooting 60% from the field.

Chea Taylor, 5-11 Sr., Bellbrook- was the leader for a Golden Eagles team that still had a solid season after graduation last year. Defensive standout who saw her game improve this year. Chea averaged 16.1 points, over seven rebounds, and will be headed to Detroit.

Kasey Uetecht, 6-1 Sr., Clinton Massie- What a duo for the undefeated Clinton Massie Falcons, with her and Brackemyre. Kasey took care of the paint, and was a strong force underneath. She averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds per game.

Autumn Whirley, 5-6 Jr., Eaton- great year for Whirley, as the state’s best pure shooter in the 2015 class was key in leading Eaton to the SWBL title. Finished averaging nearly 13 points per game, with three assists. They call her “buckets”.

Player of the Year- Sydney Brackemyre, 6-1 Sr, Clinton Massie

Freshman of the Year- Braxtin Miller, 5-10, Kettering Alter

Coach of the Year- Ed Foulk, Springfield Kenton Ridge

Syd Reaches 1,000

Syd 1000After missing most of her junior season due to an ACL injury, we weren’t sure where Sydney was on her quest to score 1,000 points in her high school career. About a week ago her coach informed us she was 36 points away from hitting the mark. She got her 1,000 point in a shoot out on Sunday.

The picture shown here is from the Wilmington News-Journal. You can read the article on the game and mention of her passing 1,000 on the local sports page of the News-Journal website.

Massie won the game to remain undefeated this season. Syd ended the game with 23 points.

Blue Star’s Classic in the Country Wrap Up

bluestarbig_twBlue Star Media was present at Classic in the Country and do a great job (in my humble opinion) providing exposure for high school girls basketball. They offered a recap of each day’s action at CITC and then posted a wrap up of the entire event. As you read through it, they point out both the strengths and areas of improvement for players. You can read the entire write-up and find links to the game by game coverage on the Blue Star Media website.

Syd got some love from them even though she was sidelined with her ACL injury. Here’s what they wrote about her:

Sydney Brackemyre – Clinton Massie – Brackemyre recently joined the much too large ACL sorority and was on crutches but actively involved on the bench with her teammates and coaches. Just a speed bump in a very promising future.

They also highlighted some of the top girls in our area including Alyssa Rice, Makayla Waterman, Kathryn Westbeld and Chelsea Welch. There are many strong players in Ohio.

It was great to see Kasey Uetrecht under the “A Little More on a Few You May or May Not Know” portion of the page. Here’s what they wrote about her:

Kasey Uetrecht – Clinton Massie – A 6-0 junior, Uetrecht has a good combination of size and perimeter skills. With standout Sydney Brackemyre sidelined, the wing/forward is stepping up for the Falcons both on the wing and in the post. Though somewhat upright, she demonstrated the ability to handle the ball on the break or off the drive from the elbows. At other points she was efficient posting up and becoming an option around the rim. Her versatility presents a challenge for opposing defenses in terms of matching up with size or perimeter skills. She was 4 for 14 in Clinton Massie’s lone game but added 6 rebounds and 6 assists in the 60 to 47 loss to Proctorville Fairland. There’s plenty of basketball in her future, what level remains to be seen.

Good to see Kasey get some well-deserved attention for her play.

Classic in the Country

Classic in the Country 13This weekend is the annual Classic in the Country Challenge. It is a weekend of basketball designed to highlight some of the best high school girls basketball players in Ohio. This year our Clinton-Massie Falcons will be playing in the event. Unfortunately, due to Syd’s torn ACL and subsequent surgery, she will not be participating.

The image on this page is an iPhone pic of the poster promoting this event. Syd is on the bottom left in her Massie uniform. She made a joke yesterday that you can see her left knee (the one she injured). She said that you can see it when it looked good and was healthy! Glad she can joke about it.

All Star Media posted an article today on the upcoming event. We are planning to take in part of the event and looks like a good one for girls basketball in Ohio.

The top players in Ohio will be in the spotlight this weekend at the Classic In The Country Challenge in Berlin, Ohio. Dayton, Ohio State, Xavier and the other collegiate programs in the Buckeye State, are anxiously awaiting the event.

“There are a lot of talented young players in the state of Ohio, and this tournament is going to have a lot of those kids,” said Bret McCormick, the analyst at the All Star Girls Report.

Most of the recruiting attention is now focused on the Class of 2014. Here is a quick look at the key performers from the Class of 2014 (along with their national ASGR ranking) who will be competing at the Classic In The Country.

No. 3, Kelsey Mitchell, 5-8, PG, Princeton, Ohio: “Kelsey is a great player who will be a program changer for someone. She is a lefty who is a great passer, and she is a big-time scorer. She can attack the rim, and she can hit the deep three,” said McCormick.

No. 14, Alyssa Rice, 6-3, C, Reynoldsburg, Ohio: “She is a very smooth post player with great footwork. She is one of the top post players in the class, and she could play the four or the five on the next level.”

No. 30, Sydney Brackemyre, 6-1, F, Clinton (Ohio) Massie: “Sydney has come on strong lately, but unfortunately she injured her ACL recently so she will not be playing at the Classic In The Country.”

No. 38, Katherine Westbeld, 6-1, Kettering (Ohio) Fairmont: “Katherine has a high basketball IQ. She just knows how to play the game. She has a strong inside game and she can also step out and score.”

No. 49, Kristen Confroy, 5-9, G, Solon, Ohio: “She is a combo guard who is a strong athlete with a great skill set and a high basketball IQ. Kristen’s stock has really risen recently, and there are a lot of top programs interested right now.”
