Parent/Student Progressive Dinner

When our IMPACT Leadership Team met in the summer to look at our school year calendar and plan various events, activities and service projects, we also talked about how we could do specific events for the family. We wanted to have something on our calendar that brought the family together. One event happened this past weekend – our Parent/Student Progressive Dinner.

We have done progressive food events in the past and thought it would be a fun event for families. Who doesn’t like to eat? We decided to host it in the church building and incorporate some interactive elements. We made it a football theme, gathered food you might eat while tailgating and included some football trivia activities. We also had a photo booth. It’s always fun to capture pictures of each event and the photo booth was a way to do that and let the personalities of our families come out.

A brief video containing some of the photo booth pictures is below. We look forward to doing more events that bring students and parents together!

IMPACT 2015-2016 Overview

Last weekend we kicked off our IMPACT school year calendar with a Tail Gate Party and Parent Meeting. We know that once the school year begins, families keep busy with school, school activities, sports events, mom and dad’s work schedules plus all the other things that life throws at us. In order to help our families manage the busyness, we provide a calendar of events for the school year. The parent meeting is our first attempt to get information into the hands of parents.

You can click on the image at the top of the page to get a closer look at what is on this year’s calendar.

For those parents (and students) who may not have been able to attend the meeting, here is a somewhat brief overview of what we talked about.

WEEKLY PROGRAMS:: Here are the programs for students that we offer on a weekly basis. During the school year, we invite all students to join us for these weekly program.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:: Each fall we participate in the retreats that are hosted at our local church camp, Butler Springs Christian Camp. The two weekends are a great opportunity for our students and leaders to spend a weekend together, for our students to connect with other students and to grow in our relationship with God. Check out the information on the retreats below.

The Junior High Retreat will take place October 16-18. Cost for the weekend is $65 and the registration deadline is October 4. (The price goes up after that time)

We’ve also added Two Parent/Student Events to the calendar – one in the fall and one in the spring. They will be fun events where our students and parents to interact with one another.

COMMUNICATION:: There are a few different avenues we use to communicate with both parents and students.  We would love it if all of our parents and students were connected to at least one of these outlets for communication.

Our 1MISSION Campaign Page is Live!

1mission_2Several weeks ago I posted about how our IMPACT Student Ministry is going to partner with 1MISSION to build a home for a family in Mexico. Good News – our online campaign page is now live!

We’ve been working the past several weeks raising funds through our Upwards Basketball Concession stand.  We missed one week due to snow, but had 7 Saturdays where we sold various concession items.  Our Upward families were very generous as they purchased items and we are almost half-way to our goal!

Now that the campaign page is live, we can continue to work toward the goal of $4,000 to provide a home for the Ortiz Barajas Family in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora Mexico.

You can read more about the family and what they have done to position themselves to build a safe home for themselves.

Click here to go to our IMPACT Campaign Page.

But you may be asking, “Now what?”  Great question!  Here’s what you can do:

1) Donate!  Seems simple, but the campaign page is designed to allow people to go online and give toward our family.  100% of the funds given go to the project and any size gift is helpful.

2) Share the Link to the Campaign Page!  Let people know about our project by sharing the link through social media.  Get the word out to your friends and give them the opportunity to partner with us as we partner with 1MISSION.

3) Grab Some Friends and Do Something!  We did a concession stand.  You can donate your birthday and have people give money to 1MISSION instead of buying gifts for you.  Wash cars.  Offer to babysit for someone.  Every amount given moves us toward our goal.

We are excited about partnering with 1MISSION to build a home.  Help us reach our goal and provide a safe home for a family while we demonstrate God’s love.

1MISSION Project About to Launch

1mission IMPACTOur IMPACT students are partnering with 1MISSION to raise money to build a home for a family in Mexico. I had a phone conversation yesterday with a representative from 1MISSION and our campaign will launch in the near future.

We had the opportunity to kick off our fundraising last Saturday at a karate tournament hosted at our church. In just one day, we were able to raise $500. This weekend we start offering concessions for our Upward basketball games.  While I don’t envision we will raise all that we need through our concessions, it should give us a great boost toward our goal.

We are looking to get the word out to our friends and church family and invite a lot of people to play a small part in reaching our goal.  1MISSION encourages students to give up birthdays, to run a race or create a project to help raise funds for family in needs.

We have a new link to our campaign page – IMPACT 1MISSION Campaign page.

The link may not be live right now, but I will keep everyone updated when our campaign launches.  Hope you will be involved!

IMPACT to Partner with 1Mission

1mission IMPACTIMPACT Student Ministry is kicking off 2015 with a partnership with an organization called 1MISSION. We learned about 1MISSION through our involvement with Christ In Youth at their junior high BELIEVE Convention and Summer MOVE Conference.

1MISSION is an organization that gives people living in poverty the opportunity to earn a house by serving in their community. The leaders of 1MISSION are Christ followers and their overall vision and mission are driven by a commitment to modeling Jesus’ passion for serving the poor. By partnering with 1MISSION, we have committed to raise $4000 by the end of April to build a home for a family in Mexico. Later this month we will find out the specific family we will be serving.

While 1MISSION works within the communities to help families, our role will be to support them by raising the funds needed. We are encouraging our students, small groups and church family to come up with ways to raise the necessary funds.

One way we will accomplish this is through our Upward Concessions. For a number of years, our church family has organized an Upward basketball program for the kids and families in our church and community.  About three years ago our student ministry began hosting a concession stand during the games. This year’s concessions will support 1MISSION.

We are asking two things of our students and families – to donate items to the concession stand and to volunteer to serve

We are also encouraging our students to come up with creative ways to reach our $4000 goal. Here are a few ideas:

  • Donate Your Birthday. One thing 1MISSION encourages students to do is donate their birthdays. Rather than ask for gifts for a birthday, students can ask friends and family to donate to 1MISSION.
  • Share Our Campaign Site with Others. 1MISSION will provide us with an online campaign page that students can share over social media. When the site goes live in February, people can donate directly toward our $4000 goal. Here’s a sneak peek at our Campaign Page.
  • Be Creative. Perhaps a small group will offer child care to families and donate the money to 1MISSION. Maybe a student will create a hand-made product where the proceeds will benefit 1MISSION. We know our students are creative and want to encourage them to come up with ideas they can run with either with their small group, a few friends, with family or just on their own.

I’m looking forward to see how God will move within our students and church family to provide a home for a family we may never meet face to face.  $4000 seems like a pretty big number to reach in four months, but I’m anticipating some exciting things taking place in the coming days.

Here is a brief video that gives an overview of 1MISSION and the work they are doing.  Please feel free to join us as we embark on this adventure.

IMPACT Tailgate Party Video

Last Sunday we had a Tailgate Party for our students. People tailgate before football games, why not before church! We had a good time with some tasty breakfast food, 9 Square (our students love that game), corn hole and even some gift card giveaways.

Dale put some of our pics into a video. Check it out:

IMPACT Snap Shot 2014-15

Last Sunday (Sept 7th) we had an information meeting for our parents and students to share about what’s happening in IMPACT Student Ministry this school year. We gave a quick overview and had a few printed handouts with information. One of the main things we wanted to provide families was a snap shot of the events & activities planned for the school year. With the many activities our students are involved in, we are hoping this will help as families juggles schedules.

Here is the Snap Shot. (If you are involved in IMPACT Student Ministry, feel free to share this!)

IMPACT 2014-2015

Tailgating…@ Church!

As we were planning our fall calendar for our students, one of our sponsors had the great idea of doing a tailgate party on Sunday morning.  Rather than meet inside during the Sunday School hour, we met in the parking lot.  We had a grill going with sausage and peppers & onions (smelled great!).  We also had corn hole, more food, a little throwing of the football and a tailgate…which is where our group gathered for the picture.

Our volunteers did a great job getting stuff together.  We had plenty of food, a good turnout of students, good weather (not that we could control that if we wanted) and a great morning.  We even had some adults come out who tried to join the youth group!  It was a great time tailgating.  Definitely something we will do again!

Great Campout

Each year, to finish out the summer, we have a camp out for our junior high students.  It is the final event with our out-going 8th graders.  This year, due to scheduling, they were already into their freshmen year, but we let them come back any way.

Once again it was a great time just hanging out together on the Vance farm.  We had a hayride, bonfire, went swimming, some played Capture the Flag, watched a movie projected on a bed sheet and some of us even slept a little.

It was a great time with our students and good event where good memories are made.  Like when we bust a trampoline:

Or even a swing:

It was a great camp out.  Now all the adults need to go take a nap!
