A New Year, A New Look

Near the end of 2016, I kind of got away from posting as often as I had in the past. I consider myself an “occasional blogger,” but over the last few months I kind of became a “rare blogger” (if that’s even a thing).

So, with the start of the new year, I thought I would make an effort to blog a little more and with that, I thought I’d give the blog a new look. With the free WordPress themes, it was pretty easy to do.

I’m not one for making a bunch of resolutions (or any most years), but I ran across a verse last week while preparing for our New Years Day church service.

Early in the book of Acts, Peter and John performed a miracle that gathered a lot of attention. With a captive, intrigued audience, Peter and John began to preach about Jesus and His resurrection.

Their message brought opposition from some of the religious leaders and Peter and John were questioned about how they were able to heal this man.

After responding to their accusers that it was through the power of Jesus that the man was healed, the religious leaders made this observation about Peter and John:

“The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.
(Acts 4:13)

As we begin  a new year, whether we make a list of resolutions or not, that would be a great way to be described – that people would recognize as someone who had been with Jesus.

Happy New Year!

2015 In Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here's an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 6,400 times in 2015. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 5 trips to carry that many people.

Syd’s Got A Blog

10455035About a week ago, I saw a tweet with a link to a WordPress blog and I discovered – my daughter has a blog!

So far she has just a few posts and I’m not sure what brought on the idea to blog. But, speaking as unbiased observer, it is pretty good. You should go check it out. Click here to go to Syd’s blog.

She has written about choosing joy and quotes The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews (a good book by the way).  She’s talked about being ready when opportunity comes knocking and how being prepared and opportunities coming your way seem to be related. Her third post looks at social media and our culture’s desire to be known and have influence in that arena.  All in all, I would say there are some good observations…coming from an a totally unbiased perspective, of course.

Happy reading!

2014 in review

While I’m not a prolific blogger, it is something I have maintained now for a few years and enjoy posting from time to time. I think these year ends reviews that WordPress provides are interesting. Enjoy & Happy New Year!

Blog or Re-Blog

reblogI describe myself as an occassional blogger. As I’ve mentioned before, I blog about family stuff, what’s going on with my kids, what’s happening in our Student Ministry and various things related to youth ministry. Some of the things I post are simply re-posts (or re-blogs) of content someone else has posted. There are many good resources available on blogs and websites and it is good to share that information.

I have been thinking recently about original posts versus re-blogs. WordPress offers the option to re-blog someone else’s post. Twitter gives you the ability to re-tweet what someone put on his/her timeline. Facebook gives you the share feature.

As someone who blogs occasionally, I wonder how much content out there is original or just a re-working of what someone else has done. I don’t think any one person has the corner on the market on wisdom in any field, but I also don’t want to be that person who just re-posts someone else’s stuff. Any other bloggers wrestle with that.

When I look at some Twitter accounts, the majority of some people’s timelines are re-tweets. Where do we draw the line of re-posting what others say and striving for original thoughts?

Feel free to chime in. And re-blog if you’d like.

2012 in review

This is one of the bonuses of blogging on WordPress. The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog. Some of this stuff may or may not be interesting to readers, but I think it’s kind of cool.

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 17,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 4 Film Festivals

2011 in review

My first blog post was on September 15, 2009. I am not a prolific blogger, but have enjoyed updating it over the past several months.

This year, WordPress sent this summary of my blog for 2011. It may not be of much interest to most, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Enjoy!
